The first ship to bring a full compliment of Immigrants to the port of Maryborough in Queensland, Australia, was the ARIADNE. |
The Ariadne was a fully-rigged wooden barque of 670 tons. Built in Quebec, Canada for Baines and Co. of Liverpool, England. Her measurements were 151 feet in length, 31 feet 9 inches in breadth and she drew a depth of 19 feet 7 inches. Since no photograph is known to exist and because of her size it has been presumed that she had three masts. |

When the Ariadne arrived with 259 immigrants it was hailed as a turning point in the history of Maryborough. The Chronicle reported, "For the first time during the 14 years since the town merged into existance has there been any recognitoin of our wants and rights. The day was as fine as it well could be and a general feeling of satisfaction pervaded the place. Let us sincerely hope that the arrival of the ARIADNE is but the precursor of many such auspicious events, and that the good future of those who have now arrived amongst us, will be an irresistible inducement to their friends in England, Ireland, and Scotland, to follow them to this land of sunshine and plenty. Advance Maryborough! And our best wishes for the return of Captain Brown in the Ariadne with a similar freight." |

A lot of the descendants of the passengers of the fateful trip by the "ALADUS" in 1873 are probably unaware of the traumatic and perilous journey made by their ancestors. The "Alardus" with 337 passengers left Hamburg on 11 November 1872 and did not arrive at Maryborough until 13 June 1873. Seven months, while most trips took three or four months. The trip was plagued with problems. There were problems with contaminated water, which held the ship up at the cape and then necessitated her return for new containers. There were a total of 31 deaths, including 3 during the month that the passengers were at the quarantine station at Melbourne. The vessel was brought into the port of Melbourne by the second officer, the captain having mysteriously disappeared from the deck of the vessel the day before, while at sea and the chief officer was confined to his cabin, in the last stages of consumption. He died at the quarantine station. |
